Volcano Mulching: Just say NO!

Volcano Mulching: Just say NO!

Homeowners often use mulch to define beds, and helps retain moisture and control weeds. However, mulch should not be applied around the base of trees. Often when mulch is applied around trees, it leads to volcano mulching. Volcano mulching is when large amounts of mulch are piled high around the trunk of the tree, creating a mound that looks like a volcano. This practice is detrimental to the health of trees and can even lead to their death.

Volcano mulching can cause excessive moisture around the base of the tree, which can lead to the growth of fungi, harmful bacteria, and shallow growing roots. This causes the tree's bark to rot, making it susceptible to disease and pests. The mulch can create a barrier that prevents air and water from reaching the roots, leading to root suffocation and death. Shallow growing roots may also result in a condition called stem girdling roots in which the root system grows around the stem of the tree causing a “tourniquet effect."

Arborists combat this issue through “root collar excavation.” Using digging tools or high-volume compressed air, we remove soil from the base of the tree to expose the root collar. This technique is essential for tree health as it allows air and water to reach the roots, improving their overall health and reducing the risk of disease and pests.

Removing the soil allows us to inspect the root system, to determine if there are any issues that may affect the tree's health. The removal of soil also helps to prevent the roots from growing too close to the surface, which can cause damage to the tree's trunk and make it more susceptible to disease and pests.
